Andiamo con ordine, i balli scolastici americani sono in tutto 3: l'homecoming, il winter formal e il prom.
L'homecoming, o ballo d'inizio anno, si tiene tra Settembre e Ottobre e fa da conclusione alla Homecoming Week, una settimana di attività ed eventi che celebrano il ritorno a scuola degli alunni. Ogni giorni gli studenti seguono un codice di abbigliamento in linea con il tema scelto; il venerdì si svolge la prima partita della squadra di football della scuola, mentre al sabato c'è il famoso ballo.
Per l'homecoming, il dresscode prevede un abito corto, da cocktail e, se la ragazza viene invitata da un ragazzo, la cravatta del vestito di quest'ultimo dovrà essere dello stesso colore dell'abito della partner.
Il winter formal si tiene tra Dicembre e Marzo e non necessariamente a scuola, anzi, il più delle volte è organizzato in sale esterne. Il vestito dev'essere formale, quindi, abito lungo ed elegante per le ragazze.
Il Prom - abbreviazione di Promenade - è solo per i ragazzi del penultimo e ultimo anno, mentre gli altri studenti vi possono partecipare solo su invito di quest'ultimi.
Proposte strane ed originali, limousine, smoking e abito principesco sono i caratteri peculiari di questo ballo che termina con l'elezione del Re e della Reginetta.
